Ahead of the October 10 Presidential election, the Liberia National Elections Commission, NEC, has transported electoral materials from Europe to the capital city, Monrovia. The Chairman of NEC, Jerome Korkoya, accompanied by three other commissioners and a representative of the European Union (EU) were last week escorted by a squad of armed police officers to receive the full consignment of presidential ballot papers which arrived from Slovenia, Europe.
According to local media, Korkoya said the early delivery of the voting cards was a fulfillment of the Commission’s commitment to respecting its timeline for the coming elections. “I feel great that we are on course, because of the prompt arrival of those ballot papers. We will begin to distribute them to all the polling centers before the arrival of the representative ballot papers”, Mr. Korkoya assured.
“Each polling place will have the maximum number of 500 voters, but 50 additional ballot papers will be given to the presiding officer of a particular center in the presence of his/her co-workers as well as observers. The 50 ballots will be there to replace any damaged ones,” Mr. Korkoya said.
Meanwhile, a report says several persons last Thursday sustained injuries at the launch of the official campaign rally of a Unity Party candidate, CeebeeBarshell. The event, which started on a good note, ended bloody as incumbent Rep. Bill Twehway allegedly led his supporters towards Barshell’s office with another rally, thereby causing a clash as both young and adult supporters of the opposing sides sustained injuries.
