Alhaji Bindo Umaru Jibrilla is a Nigerian businessman who became the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, in the 9th April 2011 Senatorial election for the Adamawa North district, and was elected to the Senate.
He, however, switched from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress, APC, where he secured the gubernatorial ticket in 2015. Alhaji Bindow Jibrilla won the contest for the governorship of Adamawa State, after defeating the former boss of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Alhaji Nuhu Ribadu, and Markus Gundiri in the April 2015 poll.
Alhaji Jibrilla is described as a business tycoon, an industrialist who has established three companies in Mubi, employing about four hundred people, and their dependents.
He proved that he is nobody’s push-over when he declined to follow his political mentor, Atiku Abubakar, who decamped from the ruling APC to the PDP, which elevated him to the pedestal of Vice-President in 1999.
“The governor was elected under the banner of APC and will continue to remain as APC governor,” Adamawa State Commissioner for Information, Ahmed Sajoh, told newsmen in Yola. Mr. Sajoh called on members of the APC not to allow the exit of Atiku Abubakar from the party to unsettle them.
The Commissioner assured that neither his principal nor his cabinet members would follow Atiku, assuring that their relationship with the former Vice President would remain unblemished. “The relationship would not be affected in any way. The former Vice-President respects the Governor as the Number One citizen of the state while the Governor respects the former Number 2 man as a prominent son of the state,” Mr. Sajoh explained.
As Governor of Adamawa State, Alhaji Jibrilla presented a budget of N105.45 billion for the 2018 fiscal year. Presenting the proposal to lawmakers at the floor of the House of Assembly, the Governor pointed out that education and health sectors would be the top priorities in the budget.
The budget tagged ‘Budget of Consolidation’ is N15 billion less than that of 2017.
Governor Jibrilla described the performance of the previous budget of N120 billion as successful, pointing out that it recorded about 60% in performance. He explained that the state government took proper consideration of the current situation in Nigeria’s economy in preparing the 2017 budget and expressed optimism that the budget would go a long way in putting the state on the right footing.
The Governor commended the level of cooperation between the Executive and Legislative arms of government in the state, describing it as excellent.
