The Nigeria Export Promotion Council, NEPC, is not usually known for superlatives. So when the council says there is growing demand for the commodities it is promoting, it gets the benefit of the doubt. The NEPC has declared that the demand for Nigerian fish abroad is increasing.
The Executive Secretary of the commission, Segun Awolowo, who made the assertion at a training session for fish farmers in Kaduna, explained that the training program would prepare fish farmers in the art of processing to boost and preserve yields for export.
Chief Awolowo, who was represented by the Assistant Director in the council, Tijani Zakari, said the federal government should allocate more resources to the NEPC to enable it cope with the rising volume of fish which Nigeria exports to the outside world. He disclosed that Nigerian fish has a huge market abroad especially among Nigerians in the Diaspora and African-Americans.
Meanwhile, in a related development, a report says Baobab fruit sales have increased by over 1,600 per cent in some parts of the UK as commodity experts suggest that it is set to become a new western super-food.
The benefits of baobab have long been known in Africa but its products had limited appeal in the UK until it was brought by the Africa-inspired health and beauty brand, Aduna. Baobab grows in 32 countries across Africa including Zimbabwe, where a new tree was discovered in 2012. The report said current sales to the UK come from mostly West and East African countries.
