The new Mayoress of Banjul, Rohey Lowe, believes that one man’s effort backed with total commitment can make a difference. Rohey also believes that campaign promises are meant to be kept, not broken. She had pledged on the campaign trail that she would give back part of her monthly salary towards the education of girls in Banjul.
During her address on Wednesday at the event tagged ‘Feed The Kids’, an annual festival held at the Arch, at the entrance of Banjul, on Koriteh Day, Madam Lowe reiterated her gesture. Hundreds of children who came together, some with their parents, to celebrate the occasion, were overwhelmed with gratitude.
She called out at the female children, “Girls, tell your parents to register you through the various councilors in your wards, so that I can help you with your education”. The mayoress was palpably sincere in her remarks, although some observers wondered how big her pay packet would be to enable her attend to the hundreds of girls at the event.
Speaking in Wollof language, Mayoress Lowe said it was her campaign promise that part of her salary will be ploughed back to help the people of Banjul if she wins. “Now, I want to make it clear to everyone that I am going to invest on the education of the girl-child, which is geared towards Women Empowerment,” she told the gathering.
After her address she was seen sharing biscuits and sweets given to her by the organisers of the event, and children could also be seen elated in receiving the biscuits from her.
