Call it blood-letting, rampaging Fulani herdsmen or terrorism, it has simply refused to be tamed. Last Sunday, alleged Fulani herdsmen massacred more than a hundred people in Plateau state for no just cause.
President Muhammadu Buhari, who had earlier visited the scene, met last Wednesday with Senate President, Bukola Saraki, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, on the matter. The emergency meeting was held at the President’s official residence before the commencement of the Federal Executive Council, FEC. It is widely expected that President Buhari would reassess the country’s security system, in line with the demands of concerned Nigerians.
After the talks, Mr. Dogara said the President was mapping out a fresh security plan, without disclosing any details. Condemning the latest killings, the Speaker said the proposed change would ensure such violence does not happen again. He described security issues as matters that cannot be discussed in public. Dogara advised Nigerians living in hotspots that, “Peace ¬is something everyone mus¬t invest in”.
On his part, Dr. Saraki said the meeting deliberated on strateg¬ies for ending the killi¬ngs and preventing a repeat.“We met with the President and he explained how steps are being taken to forestall recurrence and rest¬ore sanity, because this is of great conce¬rn to him and to us also,” he said. Many Nigerians say they have heard all kinds of assurances from their leaders before. What they need now is for their political leaders to stop the killing of innocent people. Enough is enough.
