It is rare for a visiting president to find time to check out a relaxation spot, especially one that his hosts do not particularly acclaim. But Emmanuel Macron of France is different. Last Tuesday, he graced the new Afrika Shrine, operated by Femi Kuti, Afrobeat musician and son of music legend Fela Anikulapo Kuti. He was thrilled by Femi, ably assisted by Dance Hall singer, Yemi Alade.
They were among entertainers and industry experts gathered at the Shrine to celebrate Fela’s legacy during the visit of the French President. Mr. Macron, who visited the shrine to inaugurate the African Cultural season to be hosted in France in 2020, is believed to be the first President of a sovereign state to enter the shrine.
The event, hosted by Banky W and Kenturah King, was tagged ‘Celebration of African Culture’ and which was also attended by the Lagos State governor Akinwunmi Ambode, got President Macron gleefully dancing as Femi performed.
Yemi Alade stepped on stage with a crew of energetic dancers to perform some of her hit songs live, which elicited the applause of guests, including Mr. Macron. The august visitor had earlier stated that he recognised the Afrika Shrine as an important place for lovers of African culture.
Prior to the event, Femi had boasted to his fans that the Afrika Shrine is the best place for lovers of African culture and music to be. Guests who thronged the show certainly think so too.
