Assuming you are an eligible spinster, how will you feel if someone suggests you become a second wife? This is what a Woman Representative in Kenya, Catherine Waruguru, has suggested to her fellow ladies. She stunned Kenyans by advising women to consider getting married as second wives to avoid being single mothers.
Ms Waruguru who made the suggestion publicly in the media, told women they only consider a man their husband when he is in their house. “Somebody else’s husband is their husband within the confines of their homes.
She charged sigle women to take care of themselves because the Kenyan constitution allows for polygamy. The lawmaker hailed President Uhuru Kenyatta for assenting to the Marriage bill, which she said is more beneficial to women than men.
The lady encouraged eligible spinsters to find husbands at all costs.
In her view, it is better for an eligible lady to find a married man who is willing to keep her happy by making her a second wife and raising children in his home. She totally condemned the idea of women raising children as single mothers.
Ms Waruguru feels that it is totally odd for boys, in particular, to grow under single mothers without having father-figures to look up to. She also suggested that in the absence of fathers, young people should have uncles they need to see and respect as their mentors.
The Woman Rep, who proudly refers to herself as a second wife (she married a man who was already married) had made the national limelight when she complained that law enforcement officials barred her from entering Kericho Hotel in Eastern Kenya for not producing a marriage certificate.
Many women in Kenya have already voiced their rejection of the suggestion made by Ms Waruguru, arguing that it is not living with a married man that makes a woman a mother. They claim that whether married or single, a woman who gives birth to a child is a mother. For them, there is nothing like “single or double mother”.
