Nigerians have been advised to avoid over-crowding and areas with poor ventilation during the hot season to prevent meningitis.
A medical practitioner, Dr Chioma Ofoeki, gave the advice in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.
According to Dr Ofoeki, most viral and bacterial meningitis were contagious and could spread through contact with body fluids of affected persons during sneezing and coughing. She noted that meningitis would spread easily in over-crowded and enclosed areas.
The medical practitioner maintained that vaccines were the most effective ways to protect people against bacterial meningitis.
She advised people to get vaccinated and stay up-to-date with booster doses.
