The World Health Organization, (WHO) says Nigeria is still far from meeting the 15 per cent health threshold reached at the 2001 Abuja Declaration for improving the health sector.

WHO Country Representative to Nigeria, Dr Walter Mulombo, stated this in Abuja in a meeting with newsmen.

Dr Mulombo advocatted improved funding of the health sector to meet the threshold saying that the sector was not adequately funded, compared to defence, among others.

According to Dr Mulombo, health remained a human right and not a luxury stating that more realistic policies would benefit the nation.

In April 2001, heads of state of African Union(AU) member countries met and pledged to set a target of allocating at least 15 per cent of their annual budget to improve the health sector.
