The inimitable singer, Wizkid, has done it again! He has emerged as the biggest winner at the All Africa Music Awards, AFRIMA, held last Sunday at Eko Convention Centre, Lagos, Nigeria.
Wizkid swept three of the major awards available: Best West African Artist award, The Song of the Year and the Artist of the year, dusting his closest rivals, Davido, Runtown, Tekno, aside.
However, it will be recalled that ealier Davido had beaten him at the 2017 MTV EMA by winning the “Best African Act”. Wizkid’s latest triumph has renewed his long-standing battle for supremacy with Davido. Receiving his award, the pop star thanked 2baba and DJ Jimmy Jatt for their contributions to the African music scene.
Perhaps, for effect, Wizkid arrived late to the event as his entry sent the crowd roaring with applause. Some of the quests jostled to take selfies with him, as others stood up to catch a glimpse of their idol. His bouncers went into over drive in a bid to check the crowd from mobbing him. Many were disappointed that he did not spray money on his fans, as he used to do. Nigerian acts – M.I, Tiwa Savage, Ycee, Orezi, 2Baba, Simi – also won awards at the event.
But the unplanned happened. Just as singer Seyi Shay had gotten her groove right at the ceremony, she suddenly lost her balance and fell. She quickly bounced back and continued with her hit song, Yolo Yolo. Seyi Shay referred to the incident in passing by calling the devil a liar.
