The US legal system has descended hard on a Nigerian couple – Chudy and Sandra Nsobundu – in the Houston area of Texas state. The couple has been ordered by a court to pay $121,000 as restitution to the Nigerian woman who worked for them for two years as a nanny.
The woman, who did not receive a dime for her labour throughout the period, will now collect at least N36 million windfall. The US District Judge, Nancy Atlas, also sentenced the two wicked fellows to seven months in jail and seven months of home confinement, plus three years on probation.
The naturalized American citizens who originally came from Nigeria recruited the woman in the US with the promise of paying her $100 every month. But they abused her physically and verbally while she worked at their home in Katy, Houston, from September 2013 to October 2015.
Reports said that in 2016, Chudy pleaded guilty to visa fraud while his wife, Sandra, pleaded guilty to unlawful conduct with respect to documents in furtherance of forced labour. According to court documents, the nanny worked her buff off every day from sunrise till sundown.
The couple denied the nanny breaks and forced her to eat leftovers including drinking milk left in bowls in which the children had eaten cereal. Reports said the Nsobundus prevented the nanny from leaving their employment by keeping her passport and by threatening her with physical and mental abuse.
The unnamed poor woman managed to reach out for help and was rescued following a tip to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center.
