The founders of social media platforms apparently did not intend that they should be devoted to misinforming their readers and viewers. But this is what they have become, virtually in every clime. In Ethiopia, the authorities seem to be fed up with the nuances of social media.
The country’s Attorney-General, Getachew Ambaye, has urged the public not to be misled by false information carried out by the social media on a daily basis and to get their information from the conventional media. Mr. Ambaye urged Ethiopians to downplay the ill attempts of anti-peace elements living inside and outside the country.
Mr. Ambaye, who briefed local journalists on the ugly trend of affairs being promoted by the social media in the country, said that the government would continue to carry out its duties for the successful implementation of the State of Emergency in Ethiopia.
He, however, appreciated some members of the public who had shown commitment towards lasting peace and stability in the country. The Attorney-General hailed religious leaders, elders and patriotic citizens for supporting the government to sustain its peace keeping efforts across the country.
Mr. Ambaye denounced the publications in the social media, assuring that neither the government nor the implementation of the ongoing State of Emergency would restrict the freedom of members of the diplomatic communities.
