The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. John Pombe Magufuli, was born on October 29, 1959 in Chato village, Biharamulo District in Kagera Region. Currently, Chato is a district in Geita Region. He is married to Janet Magufuli, a primary school teacher.
The couple is blessed with seven children. Dr. Magufuli is a PhD holder in Chemistry. He was elected as the fifth President of the United Republic of Tanzania in October 2015 under the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).
He was sworn-in on November 5, 2015. As he began his term as President, Dr. Magufuli proved to have all the required leadership qualities and skills. He has the development visions and goals as to where the country should head and has plans to achieve these visions and goals.
After the general election in 1995, the country’s third President, Mr. Benjamini Mkapa, appointed him Deputy Minister for Works. In the 2000 general election, he retained his seat as MP for Chato Constituency by then East Biharamulo.
He was promoted to the status of Minister for Works. In the 2005 general election, Dr. Magufuli won his third MP term. He earned the trust of the fourth President, Jakaya Kikwete, and was appointed as Minister of Lands and Human Settlement Development from 2005 to 2008.
Then he was transferred to the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries as minister. He served in this capacity from 2008 to 2010. From 2010 to 2015, he returned to the Ministry of Works as the minister. Dr Magufuli has also held various exalted positions such as co-chair of the World Urban Forum with UN-HABITAT (III); and as a member of Tanzania Chemical Society. Apart from serving in various governmental positions, Dr. John Magufuli has also held top positions in his political party, CCM.
