An African adage says that the child who receives the backing of his father can scale any fence. If we borrow the analogy, then there is nothing to hold Nigeria back from doing wonders in Russia next month since the Number One citizen has assured that funding will not be a problem. President Muhammadu Buhari has made it clear to the Super Eagles that he wants the team to aim at winning the World Cup trophy, and not just to qualify for the second round from Group D of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
The Special Adviser to the President, Femi Adesina, who made the declaration on Thursday, also charged the four other African teams participating in the Mundial not to have low ambitions. He pointed out that President Buhari has assured that funding would not be an issue for the Super Eagles team.
Mr. Adesina told allnigeriasoccer.com that the President wants Nigeria to do very well at the World Cup by being more ambitious this time. He said the Nigerian leader would want those handling the team to make their financial request in good time to avoid any undue problem.
Nigeria’s best outing at the World Cup was finishing at the round of 16 three times in five appearances. Coach Rohr has released a 30-man provisional squad for the World Cup, as the Super Eagles prepare to play Croatia, Iceland and Argentina in the group stage when the competition starts next month in Russia.
