The current Governor of Edo state, Mr. Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, was born on the 1st of July, 1959, in Benin City, Edo State, to the family of Obaseki and Gbinigie of Owina Street, Ogbelaka Quarters. He is the third child of Late Pa Roland Obaseki and Madam Stella Gbinigie.
He had his primary education at St. Matthews Anglican Primary School, Benin City, after which he attended Eghosa Anglican Grammar School, Benin City. He proceeded to the University of Ibadan, where he bagged a Bachelor of Arts degree in Classics.
The young Obaseki then traveled to the prestigious Columbia University and Pace University both in New York and received an MBA in Finance and International Business.
Mr. Obaseki is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Stock Brokers, Nigeria and an Alumnus of the Lagos Business School Chief Executive Program. He was nominated as a Global Leader for Tomorrow (GLT) by the World Economic Forum in 2001.
In 2016, the APC in Edo State, under the aegis of outgoing Governor Adams Oshiomhole, nominated Mr. Obaseki to run for the September 16 Gubernatorial contest in the state. He won the election and was sworn-in as Governor on November 12, 2016.
As Governor for less than two years now, Mr. Obaseki has been able to draw a line between electioneering and governance. He decided to become a statesman whose interest would centre on the progress of society rather than the narrow and partisan interests of members of his political party. Independent observers say the Governor has been focusing on his mandate rather than being dragged into the politics of governance. They refer to the Governor as a hands-on fellow who is clearly working to expand on the achievements of his predecessor, Adams Oshiomhole.
