The Tanzanian government has announced plans to revamp palm tree planting and palm oil production in the country. President John Magufuli declared that the Prime Minister and relevant officials will visit Kigoma region later this month in order to explain the measures to be taken by the government in this direction.
According to the President, the planting of new breed of palm trees in Kigoma region is in line with the realities of the present age. He said the government plans to terminate imports of cooking oil in the near future to pave way for the full exploitation of local potential in palm oil production.
The government explained that cooking oil can also be extracted from groundnuts, sesame, sunflower, cashew nuts and other crops. Last week, the officials in charge of managing the economy pointed out that all efforts would be geared towards making the nation capable of improving its own production facilities.
Experts believe that the gains of the impending policy can benefit the East African Community nations. No doubt, Tanzania used to be a shining example in palm oil production in the sub-region. At one point the nation donated palm tree seeds to Malaysia. Today, Malaysia is one of the leading exporters of locally produced palm oil.
Corroborating the President’s announcement, Prime Minister Majaliwa has declared that he will spend seven days in Kigoma region with members of the Agricultural team to enlighten farmers on the virtues of growing palm trees. It is envisaged that massive production of the crop will be attained.
The Tanzanian government is also eager to point out that palm oil production has become a money spinner in countries such as Malaysia and Indonesia. The two countries account for around 87 per cent of global palm oil production and the demand for the oil continues to grow. Mr. Majaliwa believes that Tanzania can toe similar steps to improve its economy.
