President Muhammadu Buhari has said he is not bothered by the defections in the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. During an interactive session with the Nigerian community in Togo at the Nigerian Embassy, Lome, President Buhari said most Nigerians appreciated the performance of his administration.
Buhari, who expressed delight in seeing the Nigerians who had travelled from the five regions of Togo to welcome him in Lome, said he was pleased to hear them commend the performance of his administration.
The Nigerian leader argued that if past governments had utilised even 25 per cent of the huge oil revenue available to them, Nigerians would not be complaining today, and cited the $16 billion reportedly spent in vain on electricity. He assured them that his administration would remain commited towards providing critical infrastructure and loans to farmers.
He declared that great progress was being made in the area of security in the Northeast zone as some displaced farmers are returning to their farms.
In his address, the Nigerian Ambassador to Togo, Joseph Iji, complained of the inability of the Nigerian Mission in Lome to issue passports to Nigerians, making applicants to go to Ghana or Benin Republic.
Leaders of the Nigerian community commended the discipline, transparency and accountability that the Buhari administration has introduced into governance. They called for the federal government’s assistance towards completion of the community’s school building project in order to overcome what they described as lack of good English schools in that country. The President was accompanied by Governors of Cross River and Niger states; as well as the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Defence, Interior, Industry, Trade and Investment.
The National Security Adviser; Chief of Defence Staff; Director-General, National Intelligence Agency; and the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria also accompanied the President, who was in Togo to attend the Joint ECOWAS/ECCAS Summit, and the 53rd Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
