President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, to urgently convene a summit on education to address the issue of funding. The Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono, made this known while declaring open the ongoing 63rd National Council on Education (NCE) in Abuja.
He said President Buhari described education as a tool for national development and stated that its funding should attract adequate attention.
According to Echono, the three tiers of government: federal, state and local, would be mobilized to efficiently support the funding of education in the country. The Permanent Secretary, who noted that no government could single-handedly fund education, urged all stakeholders to support the federal government to reduce the population of out-of-school children in the country.
Meanwhile, to harmonise the courses offered by some universities in Nigeria, the Presidency says it is perfecting arrangements to host the first national summit on tertiary education with particular reference to curriculum. The event is scheduled to hold in Abuja next week.
The Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, in a statement, said the issue has assumed great urgency due to the activities of some private universities in the country.
