Former President of Ghana, John Kufour, who was conferred with Liberia’s highest honor last week, has described that country as the classic example of “the bones shall rise again”.
The ex-Ghanaian President was among the distinguished personalities honoured by Liberia’s leader, George Weah, for their remarkable services to the country and humanity at large, especially on the African continent.
When he returned to Accra last Monday with his award, the Collar of State-Most Venerable Order of the Pioneers, in tow, Mr. Kufour, said he was glad that President Weah decided to build on the progress made by his predecessor, Mrs. Eileen Johnson-Sirleaf.
Initial reports said the investiture ceremony in Monrovia looked very much like a football awards ceremony until former President Kuffour mounted the podium and brought a political tone to the ceremonies.
In the brief ceremony, which coincided with the commemoration of the 171st National Flag Day celebration, President Weah described Mr. Kufour as a worthy recipient of Ghana’s highest honors, “because he had impacted lives not just in Liberia but the African continent.”
It will be recalled that during the country’s turbulent history, Mr. Kufour played a critical role in the peace process. As the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, at the time, President Kufour oversaw Liberia’s peace efforts and coordinated with parties to the Liberian conflict, ending in the signing of the Accra Comprehensive Peace Accord,
That was the deal that laid the roadmap for the successful restoration of peace and stability in Liberia. Mr. Kufour urged the current leaders of Liberia to continue on the path of democracy in order to sustain peace in the land.
