The Chairman of the Lagos State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Dr. Qasim Akinreti made this submission while answering questions in a live programme on Radio One 103.5FM
Dr. Akinreti pointed out that fair and balanced reportage would help the stakeholders including the government and people to ascertain the challenges and progress recorded so far in the fight against COVID-19.
The Chairman commended the Lagos Operations of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, which through its three channels namely Radio One 103 FM, Metro 97.7 FM and Bond 92.9 FM had kept the listening public adequately informed of the efforts being made to tackle the socio – economic dislocation associated with COVID- 19.
He attributed this to the age long gate keeping and quality control proficiency of FRCN.
The Chairman enjoined the listening public to remain glued to FRCN stations across the country noting that with constant exposure to credible information the people would be able to act rightly thereby helping to end the ravaging effect of Coronavirus Disease on the nation.
Our correspondent who monitored the programme, quotes Dr. Akinreti as urging the people to keep a respectable distance from doubtful news sources in the habit of disseminating unverifiable information likely to prolong the presence of COVID -19 in Nigeria.
