The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) has described the declaration of the Adamawa supplementary elections by the Resident Electoral Commissioner, as an affront to the Electoral Act of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a statement by the Executive Director of CDD, Mrs. Idayat Hassan, the CDD noted that the Electoral Commissioner had illegally taken over the duties of the Returning Officer and that the action was capable of provoking the breakdown of law and order in the state in light of the already tense political atmosphere.

Mrs. Hassan called on INEC to promptly put measures in place to sanction the erring REC, and to follow the process of the law to promptly declare the winner of the election.

The group also called on stakeholders and participants in the election process to remain calm and maintain the peace.
