President Donald Trump slammed “rocket man” Kim Jong Un during his first speech to the United Nations last Tuesday. At first, President Trump did not directly call the North Korean leader by name, but he referred to him as Rocket man and his country’s “dear leader” instead.
The US President said, “Rocket man is on a suicide mission,” and warned that “the United States has great strength and patience but if it is forced to defend itself and its allies, it will have no choice but to totally destroy North Korea”.
President Trump called on all nations to isolate the North Korean regime in light of its “reckless pursuit” of nuclear weapons and treatment of its citizens. He also described it as “an outrage” that some nations continue to trade with North Korea despite its government’s atrocities and the UN sanctions. At other points, President Trump referred to North Korea as “depraved” and “twisted.”
Earlier in his speech, Mr. Trump touted his “America First” views and the importance of national sovereignty.”As president of the United States, I will always put America first just like you, as the leaders of your countries as always and should always put your countries first,” Trump said.”We can no longer be taken advantage of or enter into a deal,” he went on.
He started his speech underscoring the strength of the U.S., praising the country’s economic growth and stressing the importance of individual nations’ sovereignty. He said that “companies are moving back creating job growth” and “our military will soon be the strongest it has ever been. In America we do not seek to impose our way of life on anyone but rather let it shine as an example for everyone to watch,” he said.
President Trump noted that America stands for “principled realism rooted in shared goals and values. We must work together and confront together those who threaten us with chaos”.
Last Monday when he made his debut at the United Nations General Assembly, he joined those calling for reforms to the decades-old organization. “The United Nations was founded on truly noble goals,” President Trump said upon joining U.S. Ambassador Nikki Haley, the UN’s senior leadership and leaders of more than 120 other nations at a forum that focused on UN reform. “Yet in recent years, the United Nations has not reached its full potential because of bureaucracy and mismanagement,” Trump said at the forum titled, “Reforming the United Nations: Management, Security, and Development.”
Trump regretted that increases in the UN’s budget and staffing had not yielded the desired results. He commended UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for calling on the world to “focus more on people and less on bureaucracy.”
“We seek a United Nations that regains the trust of the people around the world,” Trump said. “In order to achieve this, the United Nations must hold every level of management accountable, protect whistleblowers and focus on results rather than on process. We must ensure that no one, and no member state, shoulders a disproportionate share of the burden, and that’s militarily or financially,” he said.
